We put two Adobe representatives on the spot

AI’s eventual impact on photography and photo-editing is one of the biggest debates in image making. We put some widely voiced concerns directly to Adobe, the people behind Photoshop, Lightroom and Generative AI.

There’s been a lot of hand-wringing recently about the effect that AI innovations will have on the craft of photography. Will generative AI and AI ‘auto fix’ tools at best, make photographers lazy about getting it right in camera, or at worst, destroy conventional photography (and even camera manufacturing as we know it) altogether?

While Adobe certainly wasn’t the first to push AI editing tools in its software (AI sky replacement has been a standard feature in Skylum’s Luminar for some time), the company’s size and influence makes it a focal point for a lot of criticism and concern.

After all, Photoshop remains the best-selling photo editing software in the world, and Lightroom has a massive user base too.

Adobe Ai interview
Robert Christensen, Senior Director of Product Management, Lightroom and Camera Raw

To address some of the concerns about AI directly with Adobe, I spoke to Robert Christensen, Senior Director of Product Management, Lightroom and Camera Raw, and Katrin Eismann, Product Manager, Learning & Inspiration. This came on the back of some interesting conversations with both at the recent Adobe Max event in the US.

Adobe AI interview
Katrin Eismann, Product Manager, Learning & Inspiration. Before joining Adobe, Katrin founded and chaired the Masters in Digital Photography department at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and is an accomplished photographer in her own right.

How do you respond to worries that AI in the Lightroom ecosystem, including Lightroom Mobile on phones, will make photographers lazier about composition? Why think more carefully about what is in the frame, as AI can be used to remove ugly distractions?

KE: As an educator and photographer with many years of experience, AI tools allow me to me to take the pictures I would have walked away from in the past. The ability to use Lens Blur (in Lightroom Mobile) to soften or Generative Remove to conceal distractions has me looking at the world with a fresh and empowered eye.

Adobe AI interview
Generative Remove in action. Credit: Adobe

Now rather than ‘that scene is too cluttered or that object is distracting,’ I take the picture and use the AI tools to create the image I saw in my mind’s eye. More importantly, knowing what my tools are capable of – camera, lenses, and Lightroom allows me to visualise the final image before pressing the shutter and that is an essential skill we should encourage students to learn.

RC: Our goal with Lightroom is to help photographers do their best work by empowering them with the tools they need to create the moments that matter to them. All the tools we create – AI and traditional – are designed to address the major ‘pain points’ we hear from photographers. The AI tools can be helpful to reduce some of the more tedious aspects of photo editing like removing distractions.

This can still be done by hand, but it is very time consuming for many photographers. AI tools can also support photography (tasks) that are nearly impossible to do by hand like denoise a photo in a way that looks accurate to how the photographer saw it.

We often hear from photographers that Lightroom’s AI Denoise has been game changing and has helped provide them with the freedom and confidence to take shots they would have never done before, such as extremely high ISO shots of moving objects like hummingbirds or dimly lit settings like birds on a lake at dawn.

In summary, I believe that our AI tools in Lightroom help photographers have the creative confidence to take even more photos knowing that they can make adjustments later to remove visual distractions.

Conversely, do you see using AI to remove distractions as a better option than cropping, which can mess up the composition of an image or affect the file size/resolution?

KE: Tools like Generative Remove and Detect Objects allow people to edit their images by easily being able to remove distractions and imperfections. And Generative Remove is our most powerful remove tool yet, making it more seamless than ever to remove distractions in a single click for high-quality results in seconds.

Adobe AI interview, crop tool
The crop tool in Lightroom Mobile is quite sophisticated. Credit: Geoff Harris/Deborah Richards

The Crop tool is an essential retouching tool, and it works hand in hand with how I frame an image. It is a tool I use to improve an image – for example straighten a crooked horizon or remove distracting highlights from the edge of a frame. I also use the Crop tool to prepare my images for print and social media, which often requires different aspect ratios. It’s never about using a tool for a lazy fix – it’s always about using a tool to make an image more powerful.

What about AI-based ISO noise reduction tools – again, is there a risk that photographers will just get lazy about getting up early to get the best light, for example? Or add in a completely new sky as it’s easier?

KE: What we know as photographers ourselves, what we’re hearing as we engage with the community and what we firmly believe, is that AI will never replace the magic of human creativity and the enjoyment of the art of photography.

As photographers we want more time to be creative and to enjoy chasing the best shot. Tools like the latest innovations in Lightroom help photographers achieve this.

The Lightroom interface
Denoise in Lightroom is particularly effective. Image credit: Will Cheung

As for ISO, the contemporary cameras that support higher ISO settings, while delivering surprisingly good quality, have expanded the amount of time during the day and night that I can photograph. Now I am free to take pictures and with Lightroom Denoise, get remarkable results. If a photographer is dedicated to getting that early morning sunrise and golden light, they will understand that using a tripod and lower ISO will give them great results.

As for replacing skies, we’ve been doing that since the very beginning of photography when wetplate emulsions rendered skies as washed-out areas, and separate sky plates were used to create a sky. Technology allows us to create images in very different ways – some prefer in-camera exposures or an exposure bracket while others enjoy creating complex composites.

With AI lens blur getting very sophisticated, could it get to the stage where lens makers are less inclined to develop high-quality, fast glass, with great bokeh – as AI can do it and a lot of viewers can’t tell the difference?

RC: Dedicated lenses will always provide the best possible experience for professional photographers to capture their highest-quality photos. Professional photographers require dedicated lenses to naturally capture light and optical blur, which feels more authentic to the scene.

Using a dedicated lens also saves time, so that photographers do not need to edit their photos later on thereby saving a step. I continue to invest in lenses myself and love having the flexibility to change lenses to capture different goals like when I’m shooting landscapes.

Three new Canon hybrid lenses
Dedicated lenses will always be best for high-quality photos, rather than AI, says Adobe

In some cases, a photographer may forget to bring a lens in which case Lightroom can help achieve different types of depth effects to help me experiment with different types of looks.

KE: Camera manufacturers will build the lenses that the customer will buy – from inexpensive zooms to high-end primes. How a high-quality lens renders light remains magical and is part of a photographer’s toolkit to use to their best advantage.

Adobe is in a tricky position as it has to respond to AI innovations from rivals to stay competitive, but will it get to the point where you say ‘enough, already, AI is undermining photography as we know it?’

RC: Our view is that AI is a tool for, not a replacement of human creativity. We believe that AI can be developed responsibly, starting with respect for creators’ rights. This is why we launched support for Content Credentials across the entire Lightroom system [see more about Content Credentials here – Ed].

Photography always starts with a moment that took place in time in the real world. We are focused on ‘use cases’ that help better capture authentic moments.

While we are developing some capabilities that use AI, they are all focused on helping photographers save time and remove the tedious aspects of cleaning up photos. We’ve also been introducing many powerful innovations that do not use AI at all – including Point Colour, camera to cloud offload and integrations with other ‘clouds’ like Google Photos on Lightroom for the Web.

Our overall vision for Lightroom is to empower anyone to create stunning photographs, express their vision, share their stories and grow into better photographers. We’ve integrated AI into our tools in a safe way for creators to use and it is purpose built for the different apps, inspiring people to get out and get even more creative.

The Nikon Zf is one of Nikon’s most stylish mirrorless cameras, and it’s still at a bargain price, as one of the best Nikon cameras available if you’re looking for manual controls. It offers a 24MP full-frame sensor, and is currently priced at £1529 body only (the last time we talked about this it was £1551 body only), down from the original RRP of £2299, that’s a saving of over £700. Unfortunately, this deal isn’t available from Amazon US, but keep scrolling to see what deals are available near you.

At a glance:

  • 24.5MP full-frame sensor
  • ISO 100-64,000 (standard)
  • Up to 14fps continuous shooting
  • 3.69m-dot, 0.8x EVF
  • 3.2in, fully articulated touchscreen
  • 4K 30p video; 4K 60p (1.5x crop); Full HD 120p

Here’s what our reviewer Andy Westlake had to say about the camera: “For many Nikon users, the Zf’s faults will likely be outweighed by its very real charms. It’s the kind of camera that appeals on an irrational level, just begging to be picked up and used.”

The Nikon Zf won the AP Awards Readers' Choice Award

January 7, 2025, NEW YORK – OnePlus, a leading technology brand, announced the global launch of the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R. These smartphones are the company’s newest flagship devices, which combine upgraded camera systems with meaningful AI capabilities, refined designs featuring innovative materials, and refreshing colorways. The OnePlus 13 Series delivers powerful, reliable performance, creating a next-generation experience in photography, gaming, connectivity, and everyday use.

OnePlus 13: A Perfectly Crafted Flagship with Power to Spare

The OnePlus 13 features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite, the most powerful Snapdragon Mobile Platform yet. The device also offers up to 16 GB of RAM for lightning fast performance, protected by OnePlus’ industry leading Dual Cryo-Velocity vapor chambers and powered by a Silicon NanoStack battery – the first OnePlus 6,000mAh Silicon NanoStack battery to ship worldwide. This allows the OnePlus 13 to deliver long lasting battery life while maintaining a slim, comfortable profile.

The OnePlus 13 is equipped with a powerful triple camera system, enhanced by OnePlus’ partnership with Hasselblad. It packs a 50MP Sony LYT-808 main camera, a 50MP Ultra-Wide camera and a 50MP 3X Triprism Telephoto camera which can capture shots at more than 10X zoom, thanks to its AI Telephoto feature. This device has also been tuned to take excellent shots at high speed, with its Dual Exposure Algorithm, Clear Burst and Action Mode to help take perfect photos of fast moving cars, people or pets.

This device features a range of OnePlus AI tools thanks to OxygenOS 15, the latest version of OnePlus’ legendary operating system. As well as making finding things easier than ever thanks to Circle to Search and Intelligent Search the OnePlus 13 can also deploy a range of imaging tools like AI Unblur, AI Detail Boost and AI Reflection Eraser – making photos even better. OxygenOS 15 delivers a smarter, smoother, and lighter user experience with countless tweaks and improvements over OxygenOS 14.

All this is displayed on a beautifully clear QHD+ 120Hz display, the first ever to be rated A++ by the experts at DisplayMate for unrivalled clarity, depth and natural colour. The display also carries the latest in technology designed to protect your eyes, achieving TÜV Rheinland Eye Care 4.0 certification, and Aqua Touch 2.0 which allows it to sense touches even through oily residue or sheepskin and woolen gloves. The OnePlus 13 is built to last; it’s the first OnePlus device to achieve both an IP68 and IP69 rating, making it an ideal companion for users who demand exceptional resilience. The OnePlus 13 also received a five star SGS Screen Reliability Certification and underwent multiple US military MIL-STD-810H grade product tests.

Finally, the OnePlus 13 embodies OnePlus’s commitment to premium craftsmanship in each of its three colorways – Midnight Ocean, Arctic Dawn, and Black Eclipse. The Midnight Ocean colorway is the first phone to feature microfiber vegan leather, offering a luxurious hand feel along with desirable resistance to corrosion and scratches; the Arctic Dawn colorway debuts an industry-first surface-based glass coating, creating a silk-smooth and fingerprint-resistant finish and showcasing the purest white on the market, which shimmers under sunlight.

But we’re excited to see what the new Micro Four Thirds lenses are going to be.

Alicja Dyla, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

‘I took this photo with my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra during an evening walk around Łódź, Poland. As soon as I saw these lights around me, I immediately grabbed my phone. I wanted to capture this combination of shimmering figures and an image combining history with modernity. I am mainly interested in landscape photography and architecture photography. I love capturing roaring waterfalls, the sun setting behind the horizon and the magic of nature, and since I am a construction manager by profession, I am also fascinated by buildings, both historical and modern.’

‘I have been using the Xiaomi 13T Pro as my main camera until recently replacing it with the Fujifilm X-T5. Despite it being a smartphone, it has proven itself very capable time and time again. The picture above was taken during a walk around the Srebrna Góra fortress in southwestern Poland. It was a very foggy day and I had little hope of good views. Luckily, the sun began to shine through the misty forest that surrounds the fortress and boom – snapped this shot; I’m very happy with it!’

Mark Stone, iPhone 16 Pro

‘This image was taken my iPhone 16 Pro on a short break to North Wales, not long after Storm Bert. It was amazing how the weather can suddenly change in such a short space of time. The sun was starting to set over the harbour so I grabbed my camera and tripod ready to see what developed. I always carry my iPhone with me and like to visualise the scene and make some initial test shots with, it. The cameras on phones seem to get better and better and I was amazed with the hand held results. Being able to shoot in raw is a bonus too. I’m usually a people/street photography person but, slowly finding myself drawn to things like architecture and landscapes.’

‘This photo was taken with a Samsung S23 Ultra phone. I took it in Krakow on the first day of November. In Poland, we celebrate All Saints’ Day. We visit cemeteries and the graves of our loved ones, and go for walks. The weather was beautiful that day. A real golden Polish autumn. In the afternoon, during the golden hour, the light moving over the beautiful tenement houses of the old town created real magic.’

‘For many years I’ve been taking photos of the Samsung “S” series of mobile phones. I’m currently taking photos with the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. This photo is from Sołacki Park in Poznań. It’s my favorite park at any time of year. Autumn leaves and morning mists over the pond are the best reward for waking up in the morning and taking a walk.’

‘A macro shot of a leaf of the “lamb’s ear” plant. I was struck by how the afternoon sunlight was not only illuminating the fringe edges but also glowing through the leaf itself. It speaks of the intricacy and infinite beauty of nature which we so often ignore or overlook. My photography is focused on finds ‘in nature’ and not studio compositions. We daily walk by such wonders if we would only take the time to see what’s in front of us; what’s all around us. And in seeing these wonders a whole new world is opened to us.’

‘I took these photos early in the morning on a sunny day at the end of September at Friedrichstrasse station in Berlin (Germany). On my way to the train, I happened to see the effects of the sun’s rays thanks to the architecture of the train station.

It was one of those serendipitous moments you get when you’re out and about, looking at your surroundings also through the eyes of an amateur photographer.’

Fiona Winn, Samsung S23

‘This flower is called cosmos bipinnatus, commonly called cosmos and is native to Mexico. Its my favourite flower to photograph, they come in so many lovely colours. I took this photo on my Samsung S23 in my garden and the settings were 1/500sec at f/1.8, ISO 32 @23mm. When processing I cropped to square, added a glamour glow and a slight lens blur. I wanted the middle to stand out.

Photography is my hobby, I completed an online course and started experimenting with flowers especially macro. I always shoot outside on a bright day or with my light box indoors and an extra ring light. I like to capture all parts of the flower from different angles. I called this photo ‘Flower Power’ because its powerful and eye catching.’

Many types of knots have been developed to fasten with rope, join ropes, and utilize rope to generate mechanical advantage. ‘This image was taken on a recent trip to Japan and although I took many images with my camera I equally took quite a few on my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

I often look for yellow items as I believe they make a great colour contrast with strong shadows and in Japan you often come across these yellow Taxi and doubled with the zebra crossing makes an interesting dynamic image to me.’

Image: Lucrezia Herman

‘I’ve been a keen photographer for over 25 years – since the appearance of affordable prosumer digital cameras. From the beginning, my favourite subjects were architecture and abstracts, usually in monochrome. Once I made the move to using my smartphone exclusively, I became even more captivated by texture and detail shots, and the play of light on metallic surfaces.

This photo of a Rolls Royce aerospace engine was taken at Derby’s Museum of Making, a real treasure trove of industrial objects. Other photos I took during a recent visit there – both mono and colour – can be found on my Instagram feed.’

‘I captured this building with a nice sense of nostalgia, which contrasts nicely with the rapidly evolving cityscape of Shinjuku, Tokyo. While DSLRs have their place, I appreciate the convenience of my smartphone. I currently use the Xiaomi 14, which offers flexibility and the ability to take high-quality images on the go. I’m a student and relatively new to photography, so I’m really happy to have been chosen as the Smartphone picture of the week! I will continue to work hard!’

‘This photo Time of Daisies was taken in my garden on my Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro. It is believed that hawthorn butterflies always appear in large numbers, but in our area I rarely meet them and not even every year. I like to take pictures through plants to get a more unusual background blur. Most often I use macro lenses, but this photo was taken with just a smartphone through the daisies in the foreground.

I learned about Amateur Photographer only this summer, now I read it for inspiration. More precisely, I don’t really read it – I send the translated page to the text-to-speech program and listen in my native language :)’

Daniel Sands, iPhone 15 Pro Max

long exposure smartphone photo taken at london underground station
Image: Daniel Sands

‘A delay to trains on the underground meant the carriages were waiting at each platform for a long period of time – this presented a rare opportunity to see a platform without people so I was keen to capture the moment. The only camera I had was the one in my pocket – my iPhone 15 Pro Max, so I took a quick snap. Back home I edited the photo creatively to mirror one side of the frame to the other, this helped in the symmetry and helped exaggerate the “empty” feeling on the platform.’

‘I’m a photographer and a total tech geek, always on the lookout for the perfect shot to capture memories and moments that last a lifetime. Whether it’s a stunning sunset, a candid smile, or the intricate details of a bustling city, you’ll find me with a camera in hand, ready to seize the magic. My recent trip to Paris and Disneyland Paris was a dream come true, and I couldn’t stop snapping away at the incredible sights and vibrant atmosphere. From the beautiful set designs to the sun-soaked days filled with ice cream and music, every moment was a photo-worthy adventure. I love how photography lets me relive those wonderful experiences and share the joy with others!

Our trip was a whirlwind of fun and nostalgia as we embraced our inner children, enchanted by the captivating atmosphere and stunning set designs of the park. The sun shone brightly for most of our stay, adding a touch of warmth to our already joyful experience. We indulged in delightful treats, eating our weight in ice cream, and couldn’t resist dancing to the infectious music that filled the air. The beauty and whimsy of Disneyland Paris inspired me to capture countless photos on my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, each one a testament to the enchanting moments we cherished. I will hold onto these moments forever.’

‘I am from Ablekuma, Accra-Ghana. By profession, I’m a video editor and graphic designer, but my heart beats for photography. It’s a passion that I dream of pursuing to its fullest.

Until that dream becomes reality, I’ve found a unique and accessible way to capture the world around me: my smartphone. Someone once imparted a valuable lesson to me: you don’t need the fanciest camera gear to take stunning photos. Start with what you have, and in my case, that’s always been my smartphone.

My journey into photography began in 2021 after meeting Kwesi Arko, a talented wildlife and sports photographer. Despite his impressive camera gear, Kwesi showed me some breathtaking shots taken with his phone, a Google Pixel 3 XL. That moment was a revelation—I realized that smartphones could be powerful tools for photography too.

Since then, I’ve made it a habit to snap numerous photos each day, sometimes capturing a true gem. Here’s one such shot of my pet friend, Blue. Blue is a domestic shorthair cat, a common sight in Ghana, with at least one in every three households having one. These cats are incredibly reliable, capable of scavenging for their own food if necessary, and make wonderful companions.

This particular photo was taken with my Google Pixel 6. It’s a testament to the idea that with passion and the right perspective, even a smartphone can capture the essence of a moment beautifully.’

Her beauty, strength, and grace shine through in this stunning image. Her confident gaze is to inspire us to embrace our own unique beauty and power. A true celebration of black womanhood!

Nerita Kairevičiūtė, Huawei P30 Pro

Image: Nerita Kairevičiūtė

In the rye field was shot on Huawei P30 Pro. I took this picture last summer near my hometown Pabradė, Lithuania. I got interested in photography in high school. My art teacher suggested to take pictures of our country‘s architectural legacy. I took it more seriously when I sent a photo to a teacher’s photo exhibition at a middle school where I was working at the time and since then I’ve been taking photos when I go for a walk. I use my smartphone to take pictures because I don’t have a professional camera, but I think a phone is enough to capture a good shot. I’m best at capturing architecture, but I like to take photos in a variety of styles.

I am a photography enthusiast who loves photographing architecture, trying to capture the dramatic nature of it. I mainly shoot B&W. I work in Real Estate and my work gives me a good understanding of the challenges in delivering amazing architecture.

I take shots on either my iPhone or my Sony mirrorless. This photo was taken with my iPhone 14 Pro.

I walk through the City of London on a regular basis, and this day it was cloudy, foggy, rainy and the towers, using the wide angle feature on iPhone, gave this amazing illusion of disappearing into the clouds. I usually edit my photos on Lightroom on iOS.

I am currently in the process of setting up my website to showcase my photos and sell prints.

‘I use my iPhone 13 Pro Max more and more to take photos as I find the macro setting particularly amazing. I had a couple of white flowers left in a vase and when I placed them on the dark wooden floor, the contrast made the texture and outline of the petal shape so strong. I enjoy slowing down and use photography in a very mindful way which allows me to take images from different angles and appreciate the real beauty of the flowers.’

Image: Steve Redburn

‘This photograph was taken with my iPhone 11 Pro on a rainy day at Horizon 22. It’s a public viewing platform on the 58 floor of 22 Bishopsgate London. Due to the rain and mist obscuring a close up shot through the windows I stepped back and fortunately got the great sense of space and height. The figures giving some perspective to the size of the windows and the tip of Shard gives the height and depth . The shot was using the 52mm telephoto lens at F2. I used Snapseed to edit the picture.

Changing to black and white and brought down the shadows and highlights to reduce the window reflection, also to get the figures in silhouette . I am a retired London Paramedic and now have plenty of time to follow my passion of photography.  I have no particular style or subject preference but click what I find interesting and share on my Instagram.’

Over the years we have always tried to capture our travels through photographs and keep them on Instagram as a digital scrap book for ourselves and other to enjoy. This image was taken on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra from the old family cabin in Northern Manitoba, Canada. I’ve never seen the Northern Lights so vivid and active in all of my life. ‘I’m a French photographer and I have been passionate about photography for over six years. My journey into the world of photography began humbly, capturing moments with my phone. It was the start of an adventure that deeply inspired me to explore the creative possibilities offered by smartphone photography.

What fascinates me most is getting back to basics: harnessing the power of today’s phones to create striking images. I firmly believe that photography is not just about sophisticated equipment, but rather about the photographer’s eye and their ability to capture emotion and beauty in every shot.

Over the years, I have honed my technical and artistic skills, experimenting with various styles and techniques. Every photo I take is a new exploration, a quest to capture the essence of the moment.

I am excited to share my passion with other photography enthusiasts and to inspire those who wish to embrace this captivating art. Join me on this visual journey, where creativity meets technology to bring stories to life through the lens of a phone.

Victoria Fox, Samsung Galaxy S24+

reflections in manchester tram smartphone photo
Image: Victoria Fox

‘This photograph was taken on the way home from a trip to Manchester, after spending the day walking around the city taking photographs of street life. I noticed the way that the carriage behind the tram I was on was reflecting on the window and used my Samsung Galaxy S24+ to quickly capture the image. Seeing the reflection within the window grabbed my attention with the raindrops on the window showing the gloomy Manchester day. The photograph was then edited into black and white with a slight grain added to give a film-like feel.

Even though this photo was a quick shot using my phone, my real love is film photography. I have recently found my love for street photography, capturing the candid, everyday life within a bustling city shows the natural side of life. I find that using film allows me to stop and think about the importance of each frame. I still enjoy using my DSLR as well when going on quick trips into the city center.’

‘This photo was taken on my iPhone 15 Pro with the use of RAW Max. I have been challenging myself to take a photo a day and this photo is day number 558. I was at Sasamat Lake, which is about 30 mins outside of Vancouver, Canada – an easy escape from city life.  This particular weekend is traditionally grey and rainy, but today was going to be different.  It started with the usual grey skies and low cloud, but as the sun rose, things began to clear up.  I love this photo for a few reasons, but mostly the story.  The clouds are still there, but now they are fighting with the golden sunshine for the narrative of the day.  The battle lasted for about 20 minutes before it became sunny and clear.’

‘The photo was taken on a trip to London, totally a case of right place, right time to catch the late afternoon light on the Center Point building on Tottenham Court Road. Quick adjustment in Lightroom afterwards, and here we are! I’ve always been into photography but like so many others only really taught myself how to edit during lockdown in 2020 when I finally had time on my hands on furlough.

I mainly post to Instagram and share a whole range of styles and genres depending on what takes my eye and brings me (and hopefully others) joy.’

David Queenan, iPhone 15 Pro Max

minimal pier smartphone photo long exposure
Image: David Queenan

‘This is my local pier and it’s only a five-minute walk from my house, which means I can nip over when conditions are good, and I can time my visits to coincide with a high tide – which is needed if you want the water to reach all the way to the bottom of the frame. I recently upgraded my old iPhone 8 to a new iPhone 15 Pro Max and I was keen to put the camera test along with a new app called ReeXpose, which allows you to use the iPhone to create a long exposure effect. Although it’s not technically a true ‘long exposure’ as the camera actually takes a series of short exposures, which are then blended by the app before delivering a final image, you still need a tripod to ensure any static elements in the frame are rendered sharp. Further editing in Photoshop was then done to remove the land on the horizon to give the image a minimalist ‘fine art’ appearance.’

‘This photo is entitled ‘The Spectacular Glass Roof’. The famous Bollywood movie song scenes were filmed at The British Museum. The scenes depict the Museum as a collage and the interior looks beautiful, inspiring me to visit the Museum. However, for me, the most beautiful part of this Museum is the glass-roofed, sparkling white Queen Elizabeth II Great Court. I photographed this perfect architecture from the museum’s upper floor and loved how the light came through the glass roof, with the sunlight hitting the side of the wall. This photograph was captured on an iPhone 12 Pro Max with an ultra-wide-angle lens of 13mm, 1/100sec at f/2.4, ISO 32, to capture the entire area of the Great Court and The Glass Roof.’

‘These lovely fishing huts, known as Carrelets, are a common feature off the Western coast of France between the estuaries of the Gironde and Loire. I discovered this little grouping near Pornic; the outer two huts, each facing away from the middle, gave a very pleasing balance to the composition. However, gale force winds and rain blowing directly inland from the sea made tripod mounting a camera totally impossible. Smartphone to the rescue, I was able to brace against the conditions and experiment with the long exposure feature to capture the image I had in my minds eye. Thankfully the digital file was good enough to allow a little judicious dodging and burning in Photoshop to enhance detail and contrast.’

”The Early Morning Line-up’ was taken from standing on the Newport Pier in Newport Beach, California.  It was the setting of the first just past full moon of the year under clear skies, (it was cloudy the day of the full moon so I had to make do with an ‘almost full moon’ shot).

I walk the beach and the pier most mornings and am always looking for unique photo opportunities that highlight beachscapes with an emphasis on Newport Beach and the surrounding area.  This is part of my ‘Life In A Beach Town’ series that I’ve been compiling for my own personal enjoyment and amusement.  I try to post these photos to my own personal Facebook page as well as the Newport Beach Facebook page.

I took the photo using an iPhone 12 Pro Max and edited and enhanced it using both Snapseed and Lightroom.’

‘My work is under my artist name vmotd. I’m based in Dublin, and I shoot everywhere – this picture was taken on an earlier smartphone of the Google Pixel series, the Google Pixel 6 Pro.

vmotd is spearheading the democratisation of photography through smartphone tech.

The monochrome images eloquently capture the interplay of light, lines, and shapes in spontaneous, minimalist compositions. With a tongue-in-cheek nod to classic photography, they explore the beauty of architecture and contrast, with their angles, frames, and composition. vmotd’s work often returns to minimalistic, architectural frames with high contrast, showcasing their eye for structural beauty. In vmotd’s words “The choice of what you fill the finite space of a frame with is entirely yours. That choice though reveals everything and often more than you care for.”

In this poignant image, the urbanite has travelled to the seaside, standing alone on a pier. The figure is relaxed, however they’re not escaping urban angst on the boardwalk, with the vast ocean on one side, and the inevitable crushing city scape on the other.’

‘Mobile photography is something that brings me great joy. The fact that I have photography equipment with me at all times makes it easier to develop this recently discovered passion. Thanks to this, I can capture every moment. This was also the case in Agafay Desert, Morocco. When I saw a caravan in the distance, I took out my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra phone and used its 10x zoom. I captured the vastness of space and how in this space people are like particles of sand in the desert.’

Muhammad Qureshi, iPhone 13

battersea power station sunrise reflection in water

‘Battersea Power Station on cold Sunday morning at the end of January provided the most amazing subject for my photo. I always look for a different perspective when taking photos and for this one the water feature provided a “reflective” perspective. After several attempts, I finally found the right position, midway from the edge of the water feature, just as the sun was emerging around the corner and through the broken clouds. I like using the phone upside down when taking photos, so I can capture depth but also the subtle ground textures or in this case the mirror like reflection of the water.

I love the deep orange colour of the power station bricks, the emerging purple sky and the orange/yellow glow of the sun on the one hand but then the modern glass structure provides a twist!

I’m an amateur photographer in the true sense of the word as I only started learning the skillset in October 2023. Every weekend, I go out and try to find interesting photography subjects. This weekend it was London, last weekend it was Zurich, Luzern and Engelberg in Switzerland! My portfolio is slowly developing on my Instagram account and I’d love to win some prestigious awards and hold an exhibition soon – perhaps being selected as the smartphone picture of the week by Amateur Photographer is the first step!’

Andy Parker, iPhone SE

‘Taken in Saint Mark’s Square in Venice, I used the phone upside down on the ground to get a strong sense of depth and include both foreground and background features. Framing the bell tower though the arch, I waited for people to walk past to create the silhouettes of the figures. It was a bit experimental, but when reviewing the shots, I really liked the resulting shapes of the coat and legs, the angles on the tower, the round light and the archway, but also the abstract reflection on the worn marble, which all give the image lots of interesting visual elements.

Although a big fan of the mirrorless camera (Fujifilm X-series) the iPhone is now my everyday, carry-around camera, given the incredible image quality, and I currently use the iPhone SE (2022). I shoot using the Adobe Lightroom Mobile app as that allows me to capture in RAW and edit in phone using my own black and white presets. A huge fan of monochrome, I shoot almost exclusively in black and white and Venice, for me, is the perfect subject for shooting monochrome given the interplay of light, shadow and reflection. I showcase this with a website and Instagram account dedicated exclusively for my shots around the city.

Originally from the UK, I live and work in Venice as an English teacher, and photography remains a passion rather than career, but it is becoming more and more important in my life.  In fact, I have my first solo exhibition in Venice of over 30 images coming up from 10-23rd February focussing on the beauty and mystery of the venetian fog (or ‘caigo’ in local dialect). So if you’re in Venice for the end of carnival, please pop along!  This exhibition will also include a few shots taken on iPhone, so it just goes to prove that old adage: ‘the best camera is the one you have on you’!’

‘The image was taken on my iPhone 13 Pro at Gellért Baths in Budapest on a recent trip there with my wife. It is a fabulous place to visit when in Budapest because of its Art Nouveau architecture and is one of the most historic and famous of Budapest’s thermal baths. I loved the symmetry of the indoor pool, the soft light streaming in through the glass roof and the beautiful blue hue of the waters. Taking a dip in the warm water wasn’t bad either…’
